Mumbai is the country's financial and entertainment capital and draws people from every state. Space is tight and rents are the highest in India, so many renters trade commute time for lower rent by living further out along the suburban rail lines.

Where people rent The island city, from Colaba to Dadar, is premium and limited. The western suburbs like Andheri, Bandra, Goregaon and Borivali are hugely popular and vary from mid to premium. The central and eastern suburbs like Chembur, Ghatkopar and Mulund are more moderate. Navi Mumbai and Thane offer the most space for the money, which is why so many working renters choose them.

Typical rents Mumbai runs well above the rest of the country. A shared PG bed often runs about 7,000 to 15,000 a month, a single room around 10,000 to 20,000, and a 1BHK commonly 20,000 upward, much higher in the island city and prime western suburbs. Navi Mumbai, Thane and the far suburbs are more affordable.

Who it suits Finance, media, corporate and service professionals, plus a very large student and working population. Sharing a flat or a PG is common because solo rents are steep.

Getting around Mumbai's suburban rail is the backbone of daily travel, now joined by a growing metro, along with buses and app cabs. Proximity to a station is one of the biggest drivers of rent, so most renters choose an area by its line and travel time.
